Bible Teachings About the Soul

September 16, 2022

Many thoughts and opinions exist about the soul. And even many different churches, that read the same Bible, have different opinions about the soul. To solve this matter, we must look at the words of God in the Bible, who is the creator and owner of our soul. Only through the words of God in the Bible, can we find the correct answers about the nature of our soul.

Man is Made of Body and Soul

Let us first confirm that when God made man, He made man of two elements, the body and the soul.

Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

God made man from the dust of the ground, which is our body, and the breath of life, which is our spirit or soul. When the body and spirit came together, God created man.

Bible Teachings that the Soul Exists After Death

Then, what happens when a man dies? The spirit and the body separate.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

When a man dies the body and the spirit separate. The dust, referring to our body, returns to the ground. However, the spirit does not die with the body, but it separates from the body and returns to God.

Jesus, the creator and owner of our soul, also teaches us that our soul continues to live after it separates from our body when we die.

Matthew 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

If someone can kill our body, but not our soul, it means that the body and the soul are not the same. Although we physically die, the soul separates from the body and continues to exist in the spiritual world.

Bible Wisdom, the Soul is Most Important

Then which is more important, our temporary physical life, or our spiritual life?

1 Kings 17:21-22 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!” The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived.

The body of the boy was present when he was alive, and when he was dead. Meaning, that our body is not the essence of our life. When the soul was in the body, the boy had life. When the soul was separated from the body, the boy had no life. This proves that the essence of our life is our soul.

While our soul is in the body, how much time do we have on this earth? Everyone’s time is limited.

Psalms 90:10 Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

Although someone may have access to the best doctors, healthiest foods, or be in the best physical condition, the reality is that everyone’s time on this earth is limited. Even though we seek to avoid trouble and sorrow, nobody can avoid pain and suffering on this earth.

Considering how limited our time on this earth is, what is the best investment of our limited time? If we will suffer no matter what we do, then wouldn’t it be best to put our efforts towards what is most valuable? The most valuable thing to a person is the salvation of our soul.

Let us Prepare for the Life of Our Soul in Heaven

While we still have time on this earth, the most valuable way to invest our limited time is by preparing for the eternal world of heaven.

Hebrews 9:27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,

We only have one chance on this earth. There is no reincarnation to try again. People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment. Jesus taught us that to enter the kingdom of heaven, we must do the will of God (Mt 7:21). While we are on this earth, the best investment of our limited time is by investing in eternity. That is, by preparing for our spiritual life in the eternal kingdom of heaven.

Revelation 20:11-12 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

These dead who are standing before the throne are the souls of those who have died. After death, our souls continue to live and will be judged according to what we have done. What we have done are the things we are doing now. Then what are we doing now? Are we living only for our physical life which is temporary, or are we preparing our soul for the eternal kingdom of heaven?

Even if we gain the whole world, what value does it have the moment our soul separates from our body? Wouldn’t it be better to invest our limited time on something eternal that will last forever? Of course! Let us be the wisest investors of time, by living a life preparing for the eternal kingdom of heaven which is coming soon.
