Second Coming Will Occur Before the Day of Judgment

July 12, 2022

Many people have been taught incorrectly about Jesus’ second coming in the Bible. They are told that Jesus will judge the world with fire at the same time when He comes a second time on the clouds. However, the Bible teaches that Jesus will come a second time to bring salvation before the Last Judgment. In other words, the second coming of Jesus Christ is not the same event as the day of judgment.

Jesus Spoke About His Second Coming in the Bible

About 2,000 years ago, the apostles asked Jesus the same question that we all have been wondering: “When will your second coming occur?” (Matthew 24:3) In response, Jesus explained the spiritual situation of the earth at the time when He is due to appear again.

Luke 18:7-8 … Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

Jesus spoke about His second coming through this parable. He asked a rhetorical question, “When the Son of man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” to emphasize that He will not find any faith on earth during His second coming. This means that when Jesus appears a second time, there will be no faith on the earth. Who can possibly receive salvation in these circumstances?

What If the Second Coming and the Day of Judgment Were the Same Events?

Jesus taught that there is no faith when He comes a second time. Then based on what Jesus taught, if we believe that the second coming and the Last Judgment are the same events, no one can receive salvation on the day of judgment. It is because faith is required to receive salvation. Hence, there are at least three contradictions in the Bible if His second coming and the day of judgment were to happen at the same time, as many churches claim today.

1. God’s Plan of Salvation Has Failed

God has established a plan of redemption for His people, which He has been tirelessly carrying out for the past 6,000 years. But God’s plan of salvation would fail if no one can be saved on the day of judgment because of people’s lack of faith on earth. However, the Bible teaches that God Almighty can never fail.

Isaiah 14:27 For the Lord Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?

If we believe that the second coming and the Last Judgment are the same events, it is the same as saying that God’s plan of salvation will fail. Since God has set a plan to save His people, it will definitely be accomplished.

2. Our Faith Will Be Useless

If no one can receive salvation at the Last Judgment, that means our faith in God is useless.

1 Peter 1:9 … for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

The goal of our faith is to receive salvation. Then if the second coming and the Last Judgment are the same events, we cannot receive salvation because no one on earth has faith when it happens. Therefore, it makes our faith useless. This is the second reason why the second coming and the Last Judgment must be two different events.

3. The Bible Teaches There Will Be the Saved in the Last Days

1 Corinthians 15:51-52 … but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet… and we will be changed.

The Bible teaches that there will be God’s people who will receive salvation on the day of judgment (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17). These writings of Apostle Paul will contradict the words of Jesus Christ in Luke 18 if the Second Coming and the Last Judgment are the same events. Thus, it is wrong to believe that the world will be judged at Jesus’ second coming. Jesus must come a second time into the world where there is no faith to restore the true faith to the saints who will be saved on the last day, and then He will judge the world. The Bible gives evidence to prove that the second coming and the Last Judgment are two separate events.

The Appearance and Purpose of Jesus at the Judgment Day

If we compare the appearance and purpose of Jesus at His second coming and the judgment day, we can understand that they are different events.

Isaiah 66:15-16 See, the Lord is coming with fire… For with fire and with his sword the Lord will execute judgment on all people

When God comes as the Judge on the last day, He will appear with fire. His purpose will be to execute judgment upon the earth and its people. The New Testament corroborates this verse.

2 Thessalonians 1:7-10 This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction…

How will Jesus appear as the Judge? It is said that He will appear in blazing fire, and His purpose is to punish those who neither know God nor obey the gospel. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament consistently say that God will appear with fire on Judgment Day to execute judgment and punish the wicked.

The Appearance and Purpose of Jesus at His Second Coming

Then, what does the Bible say regarding Jesus’ second coming?

Matthew 24:30-31 … see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven … And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

When Jesus appears at His second coming, He will come on the clouds. His purpose is to gather His elect and save His people. His appearance and purpose at His second coming are completely different than how the Bible describes the Last Judgment. Why is that? Why did Jesus describe the appearance and purpose of His Second Coming so differently from Judgment Day? Why is there no faith when Jesus comes again, but there are people who have faith and are saved on the judgment day? All of these questions can be easily understood when we correctly realize that they are two distinct events.

The Difference in Time Between the Second Coming and the Last Judgment

The Bible teaches that the two events are not done at the same time, and Jesus’ second coming will happen before the Last Judgment.

Luke 21:27-28 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.

When Jesus comes a second time in the clouds, the day of redemption, when God’s people enter the kingdom of heaven, is drawing near. It does not say that the last judgment will happen immediately after, but that it is close at hand. There must be some time to pass between Jesus’ second coming and the day of judgment. Jesus will come first and restore the faith of God’s people before the last day. If we miss His second coming, we will not receive true faith from Him, and in turn, miss salvation. Then, the only event waiting for us is Judgment Day.

Second Coming Christ Gathers His Elect in Zion

Where will God gather His people at His second coming? Prophet Micah explains that God gathers His people in Zion, where the feasts of God are kept (Isaiah 33:20).

Micah 4:1-2 In the last days … peoples will stream to it [Zion] … He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

God’s people stream to Zion in the last days. God will restore the faith of His saints by teaching them His ways in Zion. Since there is no faith on the earth at His second coming, He must gather His people to Zion and lead them to the truth of salvation. Again, it is wrong to think that the world will be destroyed as soon as Jesus comes a second time. If you wish to meet Second Coming Christ, you must come to Zion to learn His ways, walk in His paths, and receive the salvation that He brings (Hebrews 9:28).
